Robert Capa took pictures from the Spanish Civil War including a famous one that was captured right as a man was shot in the head. The picture was printed everywhere until speculations arose that Capa had faked the photo, and his reputation has remained tarnished since.

Anna Anderson claimed to be the daughter of the czar, Anastasia Romanov. The whole Romanov family was executed by gunfire in a basement, but Anderson claimed she survived being shot and was nursed back to health. However, it was not until Anderson died that it was proved via her DNA that she lied.
